Video Summary:
Hey, this is Leo for Actualized.org. In this video, we're going to talk about what is ego.

Let's talk a little bit about what ego is. I'm sure you've heard about it. I'm sure you've heard people talking about the problems that the ego can cause for you. You've probably heard about ego death. You've probably heard about both positive and negative sides of ego.

Let's talk about ego and, specifically, about who how you can understand this concept and relate it to success and personal development. It's how to get more success in your life by understanding ego.

What is ego? Ego is basically that aspect of yourself that you consider to be "you." When I say your name and you think, "Yeah, that's me," that is ego. Ego is your self-image of who you are.
Ego is a complex construct in your mind. It's sitting both at the conscious and the deep subconscious level.

Ego is that "I" that you think you are. It's the thoughts and emotions that you are identified with. It's the beliefs that you think are rock solid and completely true. It's what you think reality is like.

That whole construct is a big and deep iceberg. It's like gigantic iceberg and only the tip of it, like 10 percent, is sticking out of the water. The other 90 percent is all submerged and you don't know what it is. It's just operating. It's just working.

The ego is you. The ego has a couple of features.

The fundamental thing that the ego does is separates itself from everything else that's out in the world. If you're coming from the ego -- and this applies to 99.999% percent of people, including myself -- you say, "This is me," and you look at everything else as not you.

That desk is not you. That other person is not you. That other country is not you.

You are distinct. You are just your mind and your body. You're the skin that you have and everything beyond your skin is something else. You have that clear separation.

This is something that you get as a biological entity, as an organism who that needs to survive and depends on survival and reproduction.

We, as a species, and every living organism, has a sense of this. It's the sense of "I"-ness. It's the sense of "This is me." This is what's important and the other stuff is not so important.

So, the goal for you is to stop judging or discerning things right? No need for wisdom, or knowledge, or right or wrong to do that? Is that enlightenment or detachment? Sounds like lobotomization to me when you were talking about numbness. If we become one with everything, don't we become nothing?.... For me, the goal is to wiser, more discerning, and less judgmental in the way you described it. I want to be aware of my thoughts and actions so that I can make good choices and help others. I don't see value in losing 'me' in the process. You even said that it is good to grow up and take responsibility and become more self sufficient. First off, how can you say it's good if there is no good? Secondly, why bother being responsible if you're just going to check out of reality completely anyway? Are we really evolving into beings that completely dissolve/deconstruct themselves? Where does that leave us? Is 'nowhere' the destination? Accepting suffering in the world as if there is none is a cop out. What is behind the smoke and mirrors of mysticism and enlightenment? It's the most complex looking thing from the outside, but take it to the end of the thought process and it leaves you with nothing tangible. The answer to everything becomes 'nothing'. I understand the allure of it all, but is there really fulfillment in getting to escape the responsibility we all fee

Answer:
Sure, my pleasure :) 1. Firstly, I myself am not enlightened. At least not yet. But I am getting close. Would Actualized.org have been started if I was enlightened? Probably not. I did not know these things when I started it. It is not clear if I will continue creating more videos after enlightenment. Even now I am seeing the falseness of doing any kind of theoretical, belief-based work. Yes, in the end, all the things I am telling you are just nice thought-stories and beliefs. None of it is truth. But most of my videos are simply here to help you increase your productivity and survival, so they are not really aiming at truth, just self-improvement. It is also possible that a belief can point you to discover the truth for yourself. Truth can never be communicated, it can only be experienced and pointed at. The thing is, most people are not ready to understand these ideas. They have more practical, burning issues. So for them, beliefs are all they known. We can certainly help people improve their lives. But that has nothing to do with truth, that is just survival and reproduction. Someone can create a $50 million dollar business or lose 60 lbs of fat, but that doesn't get them any closer to lasting happiness or true understanding of their existential nature. 2. It's great that you like your life. The only problem is that you need to fight to preserve that and your happiness is very fragile. It can be taken from you very easily by a simple turn of external circumstance, or even your own mood swings. For example, as soon as your job or family is threatened, your happiness flies out the window. Experience simply exists. There is no "you", there is only experience. There is no one perceiving experience. This is an illusion. 3. What is "good"? Isn't good merely a thought? Yes, this is so. Yes, you don't like the idea that life is devoid of meaning. The ego doesn't like this. The ego likes to hear fairytales. But in fact, reality is the most beautiful thing and doesn't need meaning. No meaning doesn't mean bad or bleak. No meaning means nothing. (I will be posting a new video shortly about "Good vs Evil" which will explain this in great detail.) I don't have kids so I try not to give parenting advice. But reality is reality regardless of kids. Yes, the worldview you and your kids are living in is a lie. You can teach your kids whatever you like. There is nothing in what I'm saying that would damage your kids in any way. It would hurt their egos, yes. It's up to you if you want to tell them the truth and burn their egos, or wait until they are older and mature enough to handle honest ideas. Their suffering is real all right, it's just avoidable is all. Personality is the problem yes, but "personality" here means something very deep. The problem is that you think that "you" are your body. You think that thoughts are reality. You think that you control your thoughts. All of this is a giant illusion. You can still appreciate your kids. That is not under threat at all. In fact you would appreciate and love them much more if you escaped the illusion of ego. Right now your love for them is conditional and ego-based. When your kids do something your ego really doesn't like, you stop loving them temporarily. You don't yet appreciate just how much the ego holds you back in every area of your life. With the ego out of the way, you are free to live to the fullest. The only reason this whole thing seems wacky and threatening is because the ego has taken root and it doesn't want to give itself up under any cost. Ego is a mechanism that looks out for your survival and reproduction. But it does so at the cost of your happiness and very being. You are so concerned about survival and reproduction that you refuse to look and see the very nature of who you are. What is life? What is "you"? What is reality? You do not know at this point. Not only do you not know, but you tell yourself that you do know, which is a lie. Wouldn't it be a wonderful thing to actually know, instead of playing ego-games? People who seek these truths do so because they MUST know the truth. They don't want to die bullshitting themselves like everyone else.
